Yesterday I talked about the Education category of TV shows and how I rank that number one when it comes to quality TV for my son to watch.

Next Up, Age Appropriateness.rating_table

Please know that just because it’s a cartoon, does not automatically mean it’s for kids to watch. Family Guy, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, South Park and the oldie Beavis & Butthead are in no way appropriate for all ages.

Kids learn so much from what they see on TV. It’s so dangerous when you child starts repeating words and/or actions and cant get into trouble by watching the wrong show. You don’t want your child growing up too fast or cussing out kids on the playground do you? Parents need to be actively controlling what their child is watching. Even some of the “Tween” shows are inappropriate for younger audiences. Older kids talking about issues they deal with is too much for a grade school age kid to see. Eventually it will be their time, don’t expose it too early.

Family Guy is so not for kids it even has a parental warning at the beginning of the show. I have not watched one whole episode of this show, but didn’t find the part that I saw very entertaining. Apparently I’m too sensitive or easily offended because people seem to think this show is hilarious.  The adult humor cartoons could accidentally be seen by young minds. Please be aware of what your child is watching.

Wrestling and fighting are my other two TV viewing no-nos. Now each family has it’s own set of rules, but I do not allow fighting or wrestling shows in my house. I have seen way too many kids get injured while trying to re-enact wrestling or fighting moves they learned on TV. For that very same reason I will not allow my son to watch Power Rangers either. Not only is it not age appropriate, it’s not content appropriate for my son.

Research the shows your child is watching. They have the rating system for a reason. Make sure you know what your child is watching before you have to re-teach them appropriate words and actions they learned from a TV show.

I don't care for Family Guy and I agree with you that is a big no no for kids. The content of it is way more adult then kids need to see. I really liked this post.
