Do Dog Trainers Teach The Dogs Or The Humans?

We have a dog. He’s a little over a year old and weighs approx. 80 pounds. When he was a puppy someone told us about the Dog Whisperer, but it wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that we watched the show.

Cesar Millan does a wonderful job of helping the families. [I'm particularly impressed with his off road roller blades.] It seems like he comes for a particular problem, addresses that problem, and goes on his way. Does he train the dogs? A little. Does he teach the humans? A lot. He even says, “I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.”

The other dog show we’ve watched is It’s Me or The Dog.
I love to listen to Victoria Stillwell’s accent. She seems to try to help the whole situation; not just one aspect of the dog and it’s family. She seems a bit more on the fancy side with her snazzy convertible and leather jacket, but she’s not too proud to scoop poop when it needs to be done. Once again, she spends a lot of time teaching the people how to react and interact with the dogs.

Both trainers use gadgets, but usually as a last resort. Praise and treats work wonders. One trait that both trainers have a lot of is patience. Take the time in the beginning and it will save you a lot of trouble later on.

Because of watching these shows I try to analyze what I do – or what my children do – when there is a problem with our energetic dog. What do you think? Do you have a dog? Have you watched either of these shows?

Can anyone remember the $64 questions? Have you been on this planet long enough to remember a time when that amount was considered a substantial prize? If you do, then I hope you’re sitting down when you read this list because here are the top seven biggest game show payouts.

7. $1,000,000 (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire)

In 1999, John Carpenter (no, not the director) became the first contestant to go all the way on this popular, prime time quiz show. And he did it with pizzazz, answering all questions without any help except for a call to his father on the last question – just so he could be the first to tell his Dad that he was going to win a million dollars. Now, that’s style.

6. $1,340,000 (Twenty-One)

Well, they say records are meant to be broken and that held true for game show payouts. Rahim Oberholtzer broke Carpenter’s record in 2000 by adding a bonus round win to his relatively meagre winnings to that point, eventually edging out Carpenter by $340,000.

5. $1,410,000 (Greed)

Curtis Warren snagged a paltry $410,000 on his first appearance on Greed in 2000. However when the producers opted to bring back champions to take a shot at $1,000,000, Warren answered the bell and won the prize, giving him the #4 spot on this list.

4. $1,765,000 (Twenty-One)

As a new millennium dawned, it seemed records were crashing faster than Y2K computers. Contestant David Legler, also in the year 2000, earned almost $2,000,000 with only six wins of this short-lived game show. Talk about making money hand over fist!

3. $2,180,000 (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire)

At least David Legler held the record for more than a year. That is, until Kevin Olmstead, in 2001, was able to take advantage of a series of $10,000 bonuses added to the million-dollar jackpot when each contestant lost and became the first-ever multiple million-dollar winner. His record didn’t last long, but he’ll always be the first to do it.

2. $3,255,102 (Jeopardy)

Brad Rutter had done well for himself during his first Jeopardy appearance in 2002 by winning the Million Dollar Masters tournament, picking up the all-time winning record for the show until our #1 entry broke it. He began with a measly $1,180,000 in earnings before returning for various tournaments and upping his winnings over the $3,000,000 mark before bowing.

1. $3,522,700 (Jeopardy)

Think it’s easy becoming the highest winning contestant in game show history? Ask Ken Jennings. In June of 2004, he won the first of what would be 59 consecutive Jeopardy games!

His initial profit of $2,520,700 is staggering but after the Tournament of Champions play (which he didn’t win) his earnings soared over the $3-million mark.

As you can see, there is money to be made in game shows. So, if you think you’ve got what it takes to go up against the men on this list, then go for it. Who knows? You might be the next all-time champion.

Farewell Captain Phil

Don’t know who I am talking about? I am referring to Captain Phil Harris of the F/V Cornelia Marie. His boat is featured on the Discovery Channel show, The Deadliest Catch.

About The Catch

Crabbing in the Bering Sea is one of the deadliest jobs. This is the definition of a reality show. Camera crews follow five fishing vessels to catch the good, the bad and the ugly of crab fishing. Boy does it ever get ugly. Lives are lost at sea every year. Millions of fisherman put their lives on the line to catch crab and to make the big bucks.

Captain Phil

Phil was the man in charge of the Cornelia Marie. He ran the boat with his 2 sons, Jake and Josh. Phil was the type of guy who laid it all out. He never put on a show for the camera and he told you what he was thinking. Phil was a fan favorite. The Cornelia Marie was featured on Deadliest Catch for several seasons. Seeing Jake and Josh grow up made them part of your family. Phil smoked like a chimney and sadly this year it caught up to him.

Last year we saw Phil admitted to the hospital with a blood clot. From sitting in the wheel house, smoking, and lack of moving around put Phil in the condition. Thankfully, he bounced back and was able to start this season on the Cornelia Marie.

At the beginning of opilio crab season, the Cornelia Marie was docked to off load. Unfortunately what happened while docked shocked the world. Phil Harris suffered a serve stroke. Fans across the world prayed for Phil to bounce back. We all knew Phil wasn’t a quitter. As most of us know, Phil lost the battle for his life back in Feburary.

The last few weeks on the Deadliest Catch we have been seeing what exactly happened. There was a glimmer of hope that Phil would recover. Tonight, will be the final episode that will have our dear Captain Phil is in. We will find out what happened to that glimmer of hope and the devastating effects of this loss. It will be a 2 hour special. One hour will be an After the Catch episode where Jake and Josh will gather with family and friends to remember Phil.

You can also check out the Discovery Channel’s website and chat with others during the show. Fans will come together and raise a beer to good ole Phil. You will be missed big guy!

So You Think You Can Dance

This has got to be the most emotional and memorable dance I have seen since the show has aired.

It was two seasons ago with Melissa and Ade. It bring breast cancer to the stage. The judges are so very emotional. Grab a kleenex and watch.

Dancing with the Stars: No Shock There!

This season’s Dancing with the Stars was so much fun to watch for so many reasons.

Jake Pavelka (my favorite Bachelor) and Niecy “Jiggly Parts” Nash were definite highlights for me. I was excited about how far Niecy came in the competition!

The winner, Nicole Scherzinger, was awesome from the beginning and paired with one of my favorite dancers, Derek Hough.

Let me ask you, is ANYONE the least bit surprised that they won?

Is it even fair that she came into the competition with so much dancing experience? I honestly feel like the deck was stacked and there was never any doubt who would win.

To her credit, she never played it that way. She worked her behind off and stretched herself to new levels. Watching her dance with Derek was truly entertaining.

I do hope that the show producers will be more discerning in the future. I would like to enjoy a little more suspense next season.

The Bachelor: I Don’t Buy It & I’m Glad Jake Didn’t Either

I didn’t buy Ali’s ‘terrible decision’ one bit when it happened. It just felt like such a put on.

It’s not that I don’t believe that she had serious pressure to go back to work. I just felt like she knew her decision before she went to talk to Jake and was just putting on a big show of being conflicted. It felt like a lot of crocodile tears and fake hysteria.

I groaned with pain when she called back later to ask to come back and I’m glad Jake didn’t let her.

I know there’s scuttlebutt about Ali being the next Bachelorette but I sure hope not…

Sex Scandal And Lies – The Bachelor Starts Off With A Bang

I finally had some free time to sit down and watch the last two week’s of The Bachelor. Wow! I was going to recap the season premiere but let’s cut to the chase and talk about the second show. In all the seasons I’ve ever watched The Bachelor I’ve never seen it kick off with a bang like this!

I knew I didn’t like Rosayln from the get go for a reason! But I still had to pull my jaw up off the ground when Chris pulled her aside before the second rose ceremony (mind you she had already been given a rose by Jake on one of the dates so she was safe from elimination!) to talk to her about her ‘inappropriate relationship’ with one of their staffers – or should I say ex staff member? I was floored that she acted like it was no big deal. I felt so bad for Jake as he talked to all the girls about the situation. He seems so genuine and sweet. I actually found myself tearing up!

I love The Bachelor!

I can’t imagine what the rest of the season will have in store for us. Then again there’s nothing that can top this!

Totally Talented Tuesday: Jimmy Fallon

Today I decided to participate in a blog meme called “Totally Talented Tuesday”. Since this blog is mainly about television, and in my case Reality TV, I wanted to show you someone I think is the most talented comedian around.

I have loved Jimmy Fallon since his very early days. I used to watch him on Saturday Night Live every week but as most of you know, once you become a parent the late nights seem to be reserved only for sleep or feedings. Jimmy’s new show “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” is still too late for me to watch but I have been able to catch up on Hulu.

This parody he has started doing on “The Real Housewives” series cracks me up everytime I see it. I hope you enjoy Jimmy Fallon’s Talent.

Real Housewives Reunion Show: Part 1

Bravo TV aired the part 1 episode of “The Real Housewives – Atlanta” on Thursday night @ 10pm. Needless to say there were many viewer questions that host Andy Cohen had to read through and despite his repeated attempts at getting the girls fired up, they seemed to be very unexcited about it all.

Kim & NeNe claim to have buried the hatchet.

I’m not so sure I believe them (they both looked a little demure), but if this is the case then ‘Que Sera Sera’. I speak from experience when I say that it takes too much energy to stay mad at someone & if you’re gonna have to work together then you might as well be civil, right?

Kim talks “Big Poppa”

Andy was quick to point out that Kim had shown up to the reunion show “sans” engagement ring. When pressed to talk about it she proceeded to explain that she had been under the impression that when he asked her to marry him, the divorce had become final. She admitted that she may have been “naive” to assume that when someone asks you to marry them, they would’ve already been divorced. Andy asked if “Big Poppa” & his wife were seperated? Kim said that his wife lives in California & “Big Poppa” lives here (Atlanta). Kim continued by saying that she will always love “Big Poppa” and if & when he gets the divorce papers finalized then he can “call her”.

Kandi speaks of her tragedy

First Andy asked about Kandi’s break up with her fiance AJ. She explained that we all saw her mother and AJ make ammends on the last show of the season but shortly after that AJ & her mother had another blow up. AJ decided he had had enough & couldn’t take Kandi’s mother’s constant ridicule. They remained friends and even had hopes of getting back together at some point, but as it turns out that was not to be. AJ passed away after getting into an altercation with another gentleman at a nightclub on Oct. 2, 2009.

Andy was asked by a viewer why someone has not addressed Sheree’s ‘narcissistic’ behavior and why she is always throwing parties for herself. Sheree just laughed and said “Because I love myself, why NOT?” Lisa was asked to talk about whether or not it was true that their home had been foreclosed on. She explained that they realized Ed was not going to be playing football any longer so they decided to “downsize” and let that home go at a ‘short sale’. They are still actively trying to get pregnant.

Part 2 of the Reunion show will be aired this coming Thursday 11/5/2009 on Bravo. You can be sure that I won’t be tardy for the party!
